Wedding Day Style P0rn: SAG Awards Edition

SAG today, Oscar tomorrow?
Via celebitchy.com

Awards season is chugging along on its way to the Oscars and this weekend, the fashion train pulled up at the Screen Actors Guild station and unloaded some stunning looks that are note-worthy and instantly enviable.  The red carpet showcased the best of colour, style and elements of the season for everything from dress styles and detailing and accents...... Enjoy!

Heavy Metals:  Alicia Vikander SLAYED in mixed metallic; the lights hit the sequins on this dress and the overall effect was stunning, Plus, that slit in the leg!!! The first hint that the thigh-high slit is going to make its presence known.  This dress quickly became my favourite dress of the night, possibly for the whole season!

THE look of the night: the gold and metallic sequins reflected off her face and the effects were gorgeous!

So what does this means for your wedding?  You can steal any of the elements of the night and incorporate them in either subtle ways or for big impact! A few notes from the night:

1) Incorporate a metallic tone to add visual punch and sheen to your decor. This isn't a 'go-big-or-go-home' proposition, you can infuse metallic accents at your discretion to make your event figuratively and literally shine. Think.....

Blush pink+navy+rose gold

Or teal+copper

Shades of blue+ivory+gold

Still not convinced? Well, maybe the groundwork was laid by Mother Nature herself. Proof: the Peacock.  Here we have a riot of colour - shades of blue, turquoise, purple and olive green - complemented by a swath of gold. It's perfect!

Via the feathergirl.com

2) Strapless dresses are sexy AF. But, if you're say, 'generous' on top, it can feel like you're walking a fine line between  being Jessica Rabbit and being an unexpected FB topless star (and potentially banned from Instagram and their naked breast policies). I can't tell you how many times April and I have had bridesmaids doing the tug-shimmy with their strapless dresses repeatedly from sun-up to sundown, never raising their arms higher than their shoulders to avoid a wardrobe malfunction. Enter the leg-slit dresses we saw at the SAGS: all the sex appeal, zero nipple infractions. Also, unlimited over-the-head arm movement!!!

3) Let your personal style shine bright like a diamond. Whether you love a good pattern,  the tactile appeal of textures, or a pop of colour, be fearless -limitless, even! - and bring on your fuschias or berries or jewel tones!  Welcome your polka dots and paisleys with open arms! If feathers make your heart flutter, let 'em fly!!!

#TBT - Sarah Jessica Parker + Matthew Broderick

Via laineygossip.com

Confession time: I loved "Sex and the City" and truth be told, I love it even more today, now that Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha have been AWOL since 2004.  The two movies that came after were, well, the first movie was good (thanks in large part to the fashion and wedding dress p0rn!) but the second, not so much, if I'm being completely honest.  The show gave us a goldmine of pop culture wisdom like, 'He's just not that into you!', vivid male descriptors like 'funky spunk', and a plethora of swoon-worthy/debate-inducing outfits.  Before SATC, Sarah Jessica Parker transitioned from child performer to Broadway, then TV in her teens, then jump to the big screen before she landed the role that would become a pop culture phenomena, as the show's main character Carrie Bradshaw.  She  has always maintained that she and Carrie were as different as night and day and she really had to wrap her head around the charater's decisions. But in what can only be described as a sign that she was meant to play Carrie, a year before the show aired she tied the knot with Matthew Broderick (aka, Ferris Beuller forever) and her wedding day attire was a risky choice, and utterly original - a page out of Carrie's personal-style book (or a look out of her closet!)

*~It's a Black-Tie/Black Dress Affair: SJP + Matthew Broderick~*

She had been in a long-term relationship with Robert Downey Jr., and also dated Michael J. Fox, John F. Kennedy Jr., and Nicholas Cage (allegedly) before she met Broderick.  He was previously engaged to Jennifer Grey, and also had relationships with Penelope Ann Miller and Helen Hunt (fun fact - she costarred with his future wife in "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" in 1985) before he met SJP through her brother.

Classy - and classic - in black and white
Via emmanueltjiya.wordpress.com

She made news last year when she said that she regretted her black wedding dress, and if she were to do it all over again, she would say no to the dress.  What do you think?  Fashion-forward or fashion crime? And more importantly, WWCD (What Would Carrie Do)??! It makes me wonder......

Traditions, Superstitions, and Creating New Traditions!

Rain on your wedding day: Not-so-good for hair, but very good luck if you're Hindu or Italian
Via luckiestgirlever.com

"Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.... ". If ever there was a widely recognized wedding tradition, this might very well be the one! But did you know that there's a line missing?

Scottish tradition for good luck, supercool idea aching to be revived!
Via notonthehighstreet.com

Every bride will attest to the fact that she has had the most offers of help to keep this tradition fulfilled in order to ensure her happily ever after, but I don't know any who have tucked a coin away in their shoe.  There are a handful of wedding traditions and superstitions that are standard and adhered to, like the couple see each other in their wedding day attire for the first time at the ceremony or else be plagued by bad luck, or that engagement rings are worn on the fourth finger of our left hands.  But the lesser known traditions are intriguing and, to be honest, could be overdue for a revival! For example,  Queen Victoria popularized the white wedding gown; prior to that, brides wore their best dress of any colour!

#andthebrideworeCOLOUR2016

Here's a list of some great traditions from around the world, as well as the origins of a few familiar wedding must-haves  (like tiered wedding cakes and the birth of the bachelor party!)

And if this stirred up your curiosity.......

*~But wait.... There's more!~*

Still thirsty for more?!?

So if you're looking to start a new hashtag or start an old-but-new trend, ideas abound!

Treats......No Trick!

Via onefabday.com

I know that age-old wisdom tells us, 'It's better to give than to receive' and there's no question, it does feel pretty darn great to give someone a gift that you know they'll love. But, it's also pretty darn cool to be on the receiving end! And when you're a wedding guest, you're probably going to find a treat or keepsake at your seat, which is always a sweet surprise!

When couples are thinking of wedding favours, it can be a daunting task - what's a fresh take on a long-standing tradition? Well, look no further, the Huffington Post Canada has got you covered!

#TBT - P!nk and Carey Hart Edition

Via classic105.com

Alecia Moore, aka Pink, is a total badass. A fearless, limitless, outspoken badass. This girl can sing.

This girl can sing live.

This girl can SING LIVE WHILE PERFORMING IN A HARNESS FLYING THROUGH THE AIR AND NOT MISS A BEAT.   Musically, she's crosses genres continually, seamlessly going from R&B to pop, her most recent work being a beautiful stripped-down folk-tinged collaboration with Dallas Green of City and Colour.  She's an outspoken advocate for animal rights, a champion for LGBT awareness, and puts her money and time where her mouth is; she donated $250,000 to the Australian Red Cross Bushfire Appeal when bushfires swept through Victoria, and is involved with a multitude of charities from Run For The Cure, PETA, UNICEF, Take Back The Night and Autism Speaks, to name a few. And she was a CoverGirl, proving that just like her, beauty can't defined be rigid standards.  Earlier this month, she celebrated her 10th wedding anniversary to Carey Hart and it's a great time to take a look back at the happy couple's wedding in 2006!

....And The Band Played On

Via theonlygameintown.wordpress.com

Planning a wedding is essentially planning a massive celebration party. And just like every party has a reason - a birthday, baptism, bat mitzvah, new job, graduation - this party is marking the first day of the rest of your lives as a team. But what if the party is a go, but the marriage is hard no? A cancelled wedding is not just a loss of deposits and payments, it's an emotional earthquake; it's a loss of solid ground, debris around your feet at every turn, and everything is thrown into a state of chaos.

In the middle of one lady's seismic shift when her fiance got cold feet and the wedding was called off,     in the aftershocks of a life drastically blown off-course, here's how bride-to-be Dana Olsen turned her sadness into a beautiful night for others.

*~Cold feet, warm-hearted reception~*

We know that the folks who took part had a very special night, thanks to Dana, her family and the vendors and services in place.  We can't think of a more beautiful way to turn a heartbreak into something positive and empowering. We wish Dana nothing but the best!

#TBT - The Starman and his Otherwordly Beauty

David Bowie + Iman
Via theredlist.com
This is a bittersweet #TBT, beautiful but heartbreaking.  Today, we look back at a couple that individually made huge impacts in their fields and beyond, and together, were the ultimate Power Couple. Last week, we lost a legend in the passing of David Bowie, after an 18-month battle with cancer.  He leaves behind his wife, supermodel Iman, their daughter Alexandria and his son Duncan from his first marriage.  He was a musician, trailblazer, actor, a trained mime(!), fashion and style trendsetter, a mentor to a new generation of musicians - he was many things.  Above all, he was an artist, in the truest sense of the word, a person who lived and breathed expression and creativity. . He was also a renegade, using the platform that the entertainment industry granted him, to shine a light on bigger and more pressing matters. This is the man who questioned MTV on their reluctance to play videos by black artists, bringing the issue into the spotlight.  The answers he received were lame and if anything, pointed out not necessarily why the question had to asked in the first place, but that the way of thinking societally was the real issue. He would play an important role in the dismantling of the Berlin Wall a few years later. But even before the 1980's,  Bowie ever-changing stage personas and fashion-forward fluidity made him the pioneer in the LGBT community without us even realizing it.  He was the unofficial patron saint to all those who felt disenchanted by the world they lived in, and accepted in the universe he was creating.

One of a kind. Often imitated but never duplicated.

Via divinevarod.com
Via popcultureuncovered.com
Iman was a force to be reckoned with; her arrival in the world of fashion would dazzle, confuse, challenge and ultimately break down barriers for generations of models to come.  Her identity and discovery were initially a tale woven out of outdated and outright racist ideals.  She would change the  idea of what is considered beautiful.  The yardstick by which a model was measured would never be the same. She became an important figure for Yves St, Laurent, the muse who would inspire his "African Queen" collection.  She would go on to be an outspoken advocate for diversity in fashion and the business world, speaking about her experiences in the modelling world in terms of acceptance and pay equity. Her success in modelling is matched by her beauty line Iman Cosmetics, a brand that would rcognize and celebrate the skin we're in - no matter its colour.

To Veil or Not To Veil, That Is The Question!

Yes to the veil?
Via froufroubleu.com

Or yes to non-veil AMAZINGNESS?
Via omgimgettingmarried.com
I've got the hair blues something fierce right now.  I haven't dyed my hair since the summer because I conquered fear of water, my bigger fear of breathing and being underwater, and my biggest fear of wearing a swimsuit in public and I learned how to swim (sloppily and let's be real, ungracefully) well enough to get me from point A to point B. BUT, my hair is definitely NOT loving the chlorine so I don't want to further stress it out by colouring it.  And, being vainglorious, I won't wear a swimming cap because I'm ridiculous and don't want to chance looking like an egghead. So instead, I've been living my hair dreams vicariously through my good friend, the Internet.  I've been drinking in all things hair on my iPad: hair colours, mermaid hair, hair styles, silver hair, short hair, celebrity hair, any hair, really.  The good news is, in the middle of my current hair obsession, I found a great post about brides rocking some short-but-seriously-sweet hair at their weddings!

*~Short hair, don't care! Wedding hair ideas that are big on impact!~*

One of our upcoming weddings this year will feature a very cool first for us here at Limitless: our bride is going sans veil.  She is leaning towards a fascinator, so sourcing out the possibilities will be a fun undertaking! I think that fascinators are amazing because there are soooooo many options and possibilities; they can be intricate, bold, romantic, simple, elegant, fantastical and everything in-between.

The ladies of The Social show fascinators done right! Like snowflakes, no two are remotely the same!
Photo via styleblog.ca
But beyond the fascinator, there are other non-veil options like headbands, tiaras, crowns, and floral embellishments.   Because I've got headpieces on my mind, it seemed like a fitting time to share a Huffington Post that featured these wedding day alternatives:

*~A 'heads-up' on wedding veil alternatives from the Huffington Post~*

Last summer, The Social's fashion guru Erica Wark had a fabulous collection of wedding accessories and she featured some great headpieces, including a gorgeous floral headband that Lainey modelled - and I drooled over! I've shared the link before but it's informative - and inspirational enough - to warrant a second look!
