Say YES! to Wedding Etiquette!

To post or not to post....that is the question!
Via thesocial.ca

Wedding Etiquette, aka Weddiquette is always a topic of contention. I blame the need to constantly define what is socially acceptable/unacceptable on life in the year 2016 and in the Age of Social Media; we are social creature but through our phones and apps. When mom and dad are Instagram and Twitter, real life away from the 'rents has become a little skewered.  Add in our worship at the church of celebrity and you got the potential to run into a lot of star culture/real people confusion. Case in point: Beyoncé and Blue Ivy decked out in white at a wedding last year, pictures splashed across the Internet and giving everyday brides who want their wedding dresses to be the only white dresses in room a much weaker case.  So it just seemed fitting that as we head into prime-time wedding season that we bone up on some common wedding issues that might crop up in the next few months, and what better way than with Etiquette expert Lisa Orr who delivered some wedding etiquette gold on 'The Social' last week!

Wednesday WOW!

Photo via fearlessphotographers.com

Thanks to our smartphones with their ready cameras and a grillion photo apps that offer cool filters and effects, we can all snap a great image whenever the mood strikes.  But even with the ability to take a gorgeous picture at our fingertips, nothing takes our collective breath away quite like a professional photograph.   And nothing inspires us more than seeing love, in all its unexpected, spontaneous, romantic moments captured in fresh new ways!

In June, the folks at fearlessphotographers.com showcased a collection of some of the most beautiful images from weddings taken around the world.  On this rainy, gloomy, windy day that is anything but - let's take a look at something decidedly cheerier!

#TBT Wedding Edition

Throwback Thursday is awesome! Celebs post old-school pics that remind us of days (and hairstyles...and fashion.... sometimes original faces!) gone by.  So what better day that #TBT to dig up some of our favourite celeb weddings, a marital blast from the past?  Please check back with us every Thursday to see what we dig up!

For our first TBT......

Chrstina Aguilera has done it all: fresh faced Teen-Genie, greased-up and Dirrrty in her XXXtina/Stripped days, a bawdy Lady Marmalade and a flirty pin-up girl... But here she was, almost ten years ago, when she got married to music producer Jordan Bratman. The wedding was gorgeous and opulent, and she looked absolutely lovely. While the marriage itself didn't last, her wedding will live forever as an example of decadence!

Christina and Jordan tie the knot!

I can't wait to see what she has up her sleeves when she ties the knot with her current fiancé..... And I hopehopehope there's a feature in a glossy mag when it happens!

Hand Me That Envelope!

I am hopelessly in love..... with wedding invitations.  Call me old-fashioned, old-school, old-timey - but I feel a surge of excitement when I get a wedding invitation.  There's a lovely feeling that comes from being invited to one of the most important days in a person's life,  and for me, there's something that is so beautiful, so magical - so promising! - about that thick envelope with all its gorgeous bits 'n' bobs inside..... A visually stunning invitation can act as a tease to the big event; the colour theme, the design and patterns chosen for each element of the invitation package, the fonts of the lettering, the finish chosen for the card stock, even the fonts chosen - these are all little hints about the couple as well as what kind of celebration they have in store for us.  There's something so collaborative, creative, and ultimately gratifying for a couple, this process of sitting down with a pro and brainstorming, expressing ideas, pulling inspirations and at the end of it all, having a gorgeous little teaser they can send out to hype their nuptials!

Feast your eyes on these thirty stationary companies that create great little enveloped works of art - and they're Canadian, all across the country and potentially in your backyard!

Wedding invitations are a sweet detail that can set the tone for your big day. Enjoy the opportunity to make a bit of a visual spectacle of it - and get your guests excited and maybe even a little impatient for your wedding!

I Simply Remember My Favourite Things...

I’m sure that I’m going to sound like a broken record when I tell you guys (again) that I got married in an ivory pantsuit. Which I loved.  Like, lovedlovedloved.  But…. if I had to do it all over again (please avert your eyes and plug your ears pantsuit, because this might insult you just a teeny bit!) I DO have a dream wedding dress that I would have loved to float down the aisle in, in an alternate universe/sliding-doors situation, of course:

Julie Andrews, aka Maria in “The Sound of Music”
Look at the neckline and collar – she was Fierce before Sasha! And yet, the delicate buttons at the sleeves were so feminine. This dress was always my idea of perfection.  And if that wasn’t enough bridal style, I always had an alternate to my dream dress:

I know,  I know,  it looks like I’ve got an old-fashioned sensibility, but this style of dress made an appearance not too long ago, just five years ago, and it was courtesy of Sarah Burton, Creative Director of Alexander McQueen.  And the House of McQueen is anything but old-fashioned or stuffy!

The one thing that all of these dresses have in common (other than the ability to make me bow down and observe a moment of silence out of respect!) is the sleeves.   It’s amazing how something so ordinary can elevate a dress to another level when you don’t see it all the time, you know?  Strapless dresses are gorgeous and inherently romantic… but oh, the capped sleeves, the floaty long sleeves and all the sleeves in between can make you swoon! So of course, I was so ridiculously happy to see a Buzzfeed post this week celebrating a lovely bunch of dresses with sleeves and I knew I’d have to share!

33 Impossibly Pretty Wedding Dresses with Sleeves

I know that there are an infinite amount of choices for dresses…  but it feels nice to take a minute and have a look at a little themed collection sometimes?

Entrances, Exits and First Dance Blues

“My Best Friend’s Wedding,” Cameron Diaz and Dermot Mulroney make a stylish getaway
(Photo via YouTube)

Do you remember a time long, long ago (in the 1990′s) when it seemed like every wedding movie had a scene where the Bride and Groom would drive off in a car with a cute “Just Married” sign on their way to their honeymoon, while the wedding reception raged on into the early hours of the morning?  Sometimes the car would be decked out with bottles, tin cans, balloons, sometimes fireworks.  The exit was almost as important as the ‘I Do’s’.  And EVERYONE would gather outside the reception hall to escort them out to the car and bid them a rowdy farewell…. It felt like if you didn’t see them leave, you were missing out. On everything.
We are definitely not in Kansas anymore.
Nowadays, the happy couple are also the partying couple, seeing their ultimate bash through to the last song.  And for good reason – weddings have evolved into a party that puts New Year’s Eve to shame and just like a NYE party, it ain’t over until the last note dies off on the speakers and the house lights go up.  What has taken the place of the exit is the entrance; your first foray as ‘Mr and Mrs’ has become a production all of its own. How the wedding party enters the room has evolved into a sometimes crazy, always cool and much-watched event that tells us a lot about them and can set the tone for the rest of the night.   On rehearsal night, April and I hear snatches of conversation from the bridesmaids and groomsmen, and while they’re totally focused on the ceremony and making sure they are hitting all the marks for the day, plotting their entrances  for the reception that night is never far from their thoughts.  Come the day of the festivities, last minute ideas are floated around and as their names are called out by the emcee, they’re ready to make an impression! I’m tempted to say that the entrances are as planned out, if not more so, than the couple’s first dance.  But what we love is that there is an entrance option for every couple and their party, whether it’s superhero-themed music and dynamic poses all the way to the fake-out where one of our couples was a no-show at the entrance doors but they appeared on a balcony in the reception room above a crowd that cheered for them and got increasingly louder until they made their way downstairs almost two minutes later!  And one option that I think is amazing, for a couple who is maybe big on ideas but are shy in a big crowd,  is the pre-recorded video that enables the couple to act out a scenario or have a plot that keeps them on their toes that culminates in their grand entrance. Below is a great example of a video:

YouTube is a great source of inspiration or examples of just how much fun you can have with a pre-recorded video that leaves you free to walk in with no stress whatsoever, having set the stage with a video that was filmed prior to the wedding day madness where nerves could be combatted and you felt way more at ease.
Yesterday on The Social, the ladies were discussing the idea of the first dance and the conversation led to entrances, so I’ve included the link below as I found it interesting and timely considering how much emphasis we’re seeing on entrances over the last few years!
Both the dance and the entrance can be fun and exciting andyet another chance to infuse a part of your personality and your own fingerprint on your ceremony.  The beauty of it is, there’s no wrong way to inject a dose of who you are into your big day – so why not have as much fun as you want?

Hot Wedding Accessories for the Season!

Image Courtesy of CTV’s The Social
This past weekend, on a scorching Saturday in May  (goodbye winter and hello HUMIDEX WATCH 2015!) with the threat of insane weather looming in the not-so-distant skies (seriously, at one point there was a ‘severe thunderstorm watch’ in effect, which also ominously called for heavy rains, strong winds and possible hail)  Limitless Events welcomed in the Spring wedding season - congrats Jann and Nick! You guys not only survived the heat and foreboding weather forecast but were a lovely couple who hosted a fantastic wedding for your family and friends! All the best today, tomorrow, and always…..
Last week on The Social,  resident fashion expert (and soon-to-be Bride) Erica Wark had a great segment on some smokin’-hot wedding accessories for the upcoming season and I was remiss in not posting them right away because they are definitely swoon-worthy!

Maybe  because it’s been such a long, dreary winter and spring has reared her beautiful and promising head, but I found everything so fresh and inviting.  Delicate, drape-y, bohemian-inspired headpieces? Yes, please!  A decadent fascinator-esque bloom that can be perched jauntily? Amazing!! Art-deco inspired clutches? We’re in!!!
Speaking of smokin’-hot – what about the men?  A man in a good suit is a beautiful thing but just what constitutes a ‘good suit’ changes with the seasons and just as bridal and wedding guest attire is continually offering new options and looks, men’s wedding day fashion is updating all the time too! Here was a segment on The Social a few weeks ago that showed the newest in new looks for men:
And things are just heating up! Wedding season is on and with that, we’re in for a fashionable, exciting ride! Make sure you visit us often and if you’ve got some wedding festivities lined up in the next little while - smile and BREATHE! You’re almost there and it’s going to be just fine!  Enjoy the lead-up to your special day!!

Forget Pennies – A Flower For Your Thoughts?

Photo via I Loves SwMag

When I was leaving the gym today, it was absolutely soggy and miserable; drops of rain the size of my head, the parking lot was flooded, it was windy, bone-chilling and skin-drenching.  As we made a mad dash to the car, my husband laughed and invoked an age-old, bad-weather-in-April-mantra, ‘April showers bring May flowers!’
It got me thinking though… what exactly are May flowers?  This innocent question sent me down the rabbit-hole as I wracked my brain for the usual May suspects, and off the top of my head I could name only two – Tulips and Daisies.   But this couldn’t be it, right? What flowers are in season in May? So off to my good friend Google for the answer because if you go to your local florists, you’ll find a lovely assortment of flowers, regardless of whether it’s their growing season or not. But knowing what flowers are in season at what time of year on a month-by-month basis can be invaluable from a wedding budget point of view.   You can make the best of your décor budget by picking flowers that are in season and thus, priced according to supply, if in-season versus demand, if off-season.   Here is a handy guide of flowers, by the month!
Now, that’s not to say that you shouldn’t use the flowers you always dreamed of having featured prominently on your big day, just because they’re not in season at the time of your wedding.  This is where you have a couple options and your Decorator will be a voice of experience and reason at this time – working with your budget, he or she can help you incorporate your favourite floral as effectively and economically as possible by supplementing with in-season blooms and having your flower be a statement piece, arrangement-wise.  You can also decide just where you’ll  use that off-season bloom for maximum impact; whether it’s in your bouquet and the groom’s boutonniere and in selective settings (head table, church pews, Mother-of-the-Bride-or-Groom pins, etc..)   And even if you want that off-season flower to feature heavily throughout your wedding day, that’s perfectly fine too; knowledge is power for  your budget because it saves a mild panic attack when you are quoted for your flowers if you’re aware beforehand that they might be a bit more expensive due to your dream flower not being in season.
Flowers: Soirée by Tara Guerard; Photo by Liz Banfield
But…. because I do love options, there are so many great ideas for non-floral bouquets and décor these days, and if you’re  thinking of bouquets off the beaten track, then look no further than these beauties!
I love the idea of a non-floral bouquet, particularly  the Brooch Bouquet.  Check out the story behind a gorgeous brooch bouquet:
Ever  After III Bridal Brooch Bouquet, as seen on Etsy
I imagine the possibilities of a brooch bouquet; bridal shower guests could be asked to bring a brooch to the shower that will be used in the making of your bouquet; the bridal party can do a day of vintage store shopping to find the perfect brooches for a fun pre-wedding event (to be followed by good eats and even better drinks afterwards) ; or, in a case of the ultimate Something Borrowed, the bouquet would be supplemented by borrowed brooches from female relatives of the Bride and Groom! If your Something Borrowed item is for good luck, can you imagine the cumulative power of a whole collection of beautiful ‘Somethings Borrowed’ that make up your bouquet?  And what if your one-of-a-kind bouquet became the Something Borrowed for future brides you know and love? You could be starting a lovely bit of wedding history!

Here Comes The Ex-Bride!

Thanks to a very famous couple, we were introduced to the term ‘Conscious Uncoupling’ as a softer, kinder, gentler, Goop-ier way to say,  ’We’re separating’.  But while we welcomed this phrasing with a bit of internal laughter and maybe a stifled groan, did you know that there’s been something taking the Uncoupling of other couples to new levels – the divorce party? Jack White and his model ex-wife Karen Elson threw a Divorce Party  and put the concept in our collective consciousness,  being a celebrity couple, but there have been plenty of parties before theirs – and there’ll be many more to come it seems!  Robin Thicke recently threw himself an unofficial party, and a quick Google search will find you tons of Pinterest boards dedicated to marking your divorce with the same effort as when you celebrated your marriage and articles giving you first hand accounts of these events.  They are cropping up more and more, and even though April and I love to plan couples’  big walks down the aisle, we know that sometimes, things don’t work out and we’d be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge this particular wedding trend! We love love, but hey, if life gives some couples lemons, who’s to say they can’t juice those bad boys, call up their closest friends and make some refreshing, liberating lemonade, yes?

A Very ‘You’ Kind of Wedding

“Today You are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive that is Youer than You.”
Dr. Seuss might have written books for kids, but he was a clever one, that Dr. Seuss! He hoped that his simple but eloquent messages would resonate with the grown-ups who were reading his works and remind them of some of the universe’s truths, and inspire the young ears and minds hearing them. His books and words  resonate with kids from one to ninety-nine. And this one line has always stuck with me. So it’s in this spirit that I present you all with this wedding recently featured on Buzzfeed:

One Wedding to Rule Them All...

So. Much. Win.
This couple’s wedding is a testament to Dr. Seuss’s sentiment and each detail – from the boutonnieres to the gorgeous Save-the-Date and invitations, all the way to the unique and outside-the-box backdrop – is a reflection of the uniqueness and personalities of the Bride and Groom!
So, we get to the meat of the post, so to speak… And it’s a simple truth: Please don’t forget to invite yourself to your wedding!
I haven’t lost my mind, I promise! Yes, of course you’re going to be there, but what about the ‘you’-ness that will set your wedding apart from everyone else? To take a page out of our Superhero Couple’s (comic) book – what’s YOUR definer? There are things that are a part of each and every one of us – say, our favourite movie that we can quote almost line for line; the season of the year that makes us feel alive (even if it IS the dead of winter!); the places we go, both deep in the pages of our favourite books and Wardrobes and Spare-Ooms, or the streets of the cities that beckon us again and again. It’s the love you have for these things, how much you embrace them, that make them become synonymous with you among the people in your lives; these are some of the things that define us. And if a wedding is a celebration of love, then this is the perfect time to include these things we love – and build a day that is yours, through and through!
One more, a wedding shoot idea from Buzzfeed to give you some food (or lettuce?) for thought:

It’s My Party….

….. and I’ll pick who I want to!
While this might sound like a rally cry for a night of fun, hi-jinx of the tame and not-so-tame variety and a celebration to end all celebrations, we’re talking about your Bridal Party and the importance of picking the ladies and gents to hold court on your big day – and every step leading up to your wedding!
Size DOES Matter!

I think  that we all have an unofficial list in the back of our minds of who we want sharing in one of the biggest moments of our lives;  when we get engaged, that list  becomes a reality and sometimes we want to start asking people immediately. First off, ENJOY YOUR ENGAGEMENT GLOW! Take some time to let the big question and your even bigger answer  sink in - you’ve got a little homework to do before you start popping questions of your own!
Once you’ve let a little time pass, possibly set a wedding date, have looked into the wedding colours you’d like and thinking about venues,  it’s time to pick your wedding party .  Traditionally, the bigger the wedding, the bigger the wedding party. But with times changing, you can have as many or as few people as you like. We’ve seen big weddings with bridal parties both big and small; one wedding had one Bridesmaid, the Maid of Honour and the Best Man.  Size is a personal preference and can be born from many factors –  a huge circle of friends that you’re close to and want to share the experience with, family or cultural traditions, or wanting to be surrounded by very few, but very special people.  So big or small, there is no real right or wrong!  What helps determine your party is you.  The ancient Greeks insightfully deduced to ‘know thyself’ and if there’s one time in your life you really need to have a handle on just what you’re made of, it’s when you’re planning a wedding.  While it is an exciting time in your life, it can also be one of the most stressful.  Be honest and determine your own capabilities as well as expectations for yourself and your Bridal party.   Are you going to be actively and heavily involved in the planning of your wedding?  How much of the work will you  be taking on board (making your own invitations and escort cards, wedding favours, or even  wedding décor)  or will most of these things be taken care of by outside vendors? Will you  require an “all-hands-on-deck’ , fully involved wedding party to help along the way, or will things be taken care of externally so that it’ll be more of laid-back lead up, with the job description being to have fun and party until the sun comes up?  The people you pick will need to know up front what you want – and need – from them. Remember that some people have been in other weddings which were subject to their own set of expectations.   And aside from your wedding, there could be things going on in their lives that could limit how present they are leading up to the wedding.  You’ll have to be realistic about what you can and can’t expect. For example, you might want to ask one of your oldest friends to be a Bridesmaid because you can’t imagine not having her as part of your day.  She’s just gone back to work from maternity leave so she’s finding her footing again, juggling work and having  a young child at home .  Your wedding is going to be a very intimate wedding and you’ve decided to make all of your centrepieces and wedding décor and invitations yourself.     If there are weekends that the bridal party will be called upon to help you with centrepieces or bombonieres and you’ll need every set of hands you can get – will her not being able to help out as much be an issue?  Will you need her to attend multiple dress shopping days with the other girls in the party?  Understand that while she will want to help and be involved, her schedule might not allow and instead of what she perceives as ‘letting you down’, she could decline your Bridesmaid invitation; ultimately, if you know that her life has changed but she has a special place in the party regardless, let her know that her moral support is more important to you then her being able to attend to every detail or fitting.

What A Bride Wants!
People are amazing – and complex.   When you mix a group of people, you never know what you’ll get; you can get a well-oiled machine 0r, sometimes, you might have to do a little maintenance to keep the machine running smoothly.   But when does maintenance become full-on wrangling?  This is something you can partly control by having a clear idea of the things that can cause dissension.  First, know and understand the personalities of the people in the party.  If you’ve asked your outspoken friend, your indecisive but well-intentioned friend, and  your  partner in jeans-and-Converse-lovin’  friend who hates getting dressed up to be bridesmaids, be prepared that some of the traits that you’ve loved (or the opposite of, depending on the circumstance!)  throughout your friendships with them will factor in at times during the run-up to the wedding and you might have to navigate some rough waters.  Wedding details can trip us up and cause the biggest ripples.   It’s natural that you’re going to have go back and forth with your party  to coordinate schedules, get feedback on things like makeup or dress styles, but if you have a vision of what you want your day to look like,  you have to communicate that in order to avoid unnecessary conflicts.  If you’ve decided that the ladies in your group can wear a dress of their own choosing, make sure you do give them any parameters that you might have up front.  When April got married, she let all of us pick our own black  dresses but  her only  specification was that our dresses be floor-length, not cocktail.  We were pretty lucky to have relative carte blanche in regards to dress, hair and makeup but, that being said, if she had asked us to wear seafoam green with elbow gloves and a  severe ballerina bun, we would have done it,  because that’s what you do for your Bride!  Part of the job description is being as cooperative with each other and the Bride’s wishes, and when she has to struggle to be heard, there’s a disconnect somewhere along the line.  Each Bridesmaid will bring something to the table – that outspoken friend might light a (friendly) fire under you when you’re second-guessing yourself; your indecisive friend might very well save your hide a little down the road when you’re rushing headlong into something you should take a step back from; and your Converse friend can very well be your foot-and-ankle or face-planting saviour when she points out that the only man currently living in your shoe closet  is Chuck and maybe a  4-inched platform guy named Manolo might not be your best decision for your big day.
And this leads to the person who will be invaluable to you,  during the planning process all the way through to the last dance at the ceremony.  Your MOH (Maid/Man of Honour) becomes RHG (Right Hand Gal/Guy) and a great liaison between yourself and the rest of the wedding party.   Because RHG is probably one of the closest people in your life, they’ll be privy to all the wedding details, be part of all the planning and  they will be the best possible person to help you with putting out any fires and keeping the wedding party at peace and on track.  RHG is also probably familiar and friendly with the rest of the Bridal party, making it much easier to help communicate your idea and wishes.  Your MOH will  be the easiest person to pick, they just fit and it was probably never even a question of ‘who’ but rather ‘when can I make this official?!’    This is the person who knows you as well as your groom and your family and will have your best interests at heart and would gladly step in when they think you’re overwhelmed …. all you have to do is ask.
X, Y, and Match-y, Match-y and Brothers and Sisters

Shoes match:  you have a left shoe and a right shoe, yes?  Thankfully, wedding parties aren’t shoes and don’t have to come in pairs!  The beautiful thing about a wedding party is that these are the people who you’ve LIVED with –  laughed with (and let’s be honest, laughed AT, but no doubt the favour has been returned as well, all in good fun!) cried with, created memories with and you couldn’t imagine what life would’ve been like if you’d never met them.   So let’s say that a Bride has five people she wants in her party and her groom has four people.  This use to mean that  a fifth groomsmen would be asked to keep the numbers even.  This is no longer the case! Not only can you have ‘odd numbers’ but you can definitely have fun with the processions (like one groomsman escorting two bridesmaids down the aisle, or vice-versa, or an ‘extra’ attendant escorting some VIP guests down the aisle early in the procession and seating them  (like a grandparent(s) or great-grandparent(s) who’s particularly close to the Bride or Groom)   There’s always a way to turn ‘odd’ into something even more lovely on your day.  We’ve also been seeing a really beautiful  trend that’s checking gender rules at the door and letting love lead the way – sisters and female friends have been proudly standing by the Grooms-to-be as either a  Grooms-person or as Best Person (Right Hand Gal!)  and brothers or male friends of the Bride-to-be are beaming with pride on her side of the aisle.   Please don’t be limited by what we’ve all seen or what we  think is ‘traditional’ or ‘normal’ because at the end of the day, a bride and groom should have what’s ‘right’ for them!
Your wedding day is yours and yours alone…… Make it all that you want, and if there are any rules, they should be the ones written by you!

Introductions and a Modern Refresher on Etiquette

Hello Lovely People!
We are Limitless Events and we’re thrilled you’re stopping by! For 2015, we’re kicking off the year with a new website and a shiny new blog to go with it so please drop by often! We’ll be blogging about all things Wedding – cool new trends, pictures to make you swoon, decor ideas and themes, anything really! – so make sure you bookmark us and visit frequently. We look forward to sharing what grabs us, inspires us, amuses us and enlightens us with you!
For our inaugural post we wanted to share something that aired last week on CTV's daytime talk show "The Social". The show is broadcast daily Monday to Friday, and features informative segments that cover the bases from fashion, beauty, health, finance, food and drink, celebrity gossip all the way to delving into current news events, lively discussion and debate. And that's not even taking into account the people who stop by to chat with the ladies, guests that run the gamut from Eugenie Bouchard to Lena Dunham to Justin Trudeau. Last Friday, they interviewed Bettie Bradley, a seasoned wedding expert who answered some timely questions about wedding etiquette.
As time goes on and wedding ideals evolve and new ideas take shape, the rules of the game find themselves subject to revision or change. But this interview was a good reminder that even though trends come and go and then make way for the next big things, good wedding etiquette never goes out of style. Take a look, and don't forget to catch "The Social" for more good stuff like this!
